SKIN CONDITIONS

Rosacea, Acne & Acne scars

Rosacea and Acne are very common skin conditions that can cause a lot of emotional distress. They result in inflammation of the skin and may be followed by post inflammation pigmentation (PIH) in some skin types. Rosacea is often also associated with eyelid inflammation with ocular surface disease. These can affect your self-esteem, and over time may cause permanent physical scarring.

At FaceRestoration’s London and Cambridge clinics, we objectively assess your skin with VISIA skin analysis and can monitor your skin health.

ABOUT THIS CONDITION

INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS

Rosacea
Rosacea has a prevalence of up to 22% in fair-skinned populations, and is more prevalent in females. It is a long-term condition that typically affects the face, resulting in redness, spots and dilated superficial blood vessels. It can be aggravated by certain conditions including heat, exercise, sunlight, cold, spicy food, alcohol, menopause and psychological stress. The use of topical steroid cream and harsh skin cleansers can disrupt the barrier function of the skin also aggravating the condition. Ocular rosacea or blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids that may present prior to skin rosacea, leading to sensitive, red eyes and styes.

Acne
The skin has tiny holes called pores that can become blocked by oil, bacteria, shedding skin cells and dirt. The blocked pores can lead to inflammation and the formation of papules, pustules, nodules and cysts, which are more likely to result in scarring. Acne is usually related to hormonal changes, and not due to poor skin hygiene. In fact, acne can be made worse by the disruption of the skin’s barrier function with the use of harsh skin cleansers. It can also flare up during periods of illness and stress.

Acne Scars
When inflamed acne heals, scarring may be left particularly if spots are picked. Acne scars can take the form of ice pick scars, small deep holes in the skin that look like the skin has been punctured with a sharp object. Rolling scars, formed by bands of scar tissue under the skin and boxcar scars which are larger round or oval craters in the skin. Usually active acne and inflammation will be treated and allowed to heal prior to commencing scar revision.

What are the main causes of rosacea?

There is no known cause of rosacea, but it may be related to an overactive immune system, heredity, environmental factors, or a combination of these factors. Rosacea is not contagious and it is not caused by poor hygiene.

Is there more than one type of rosacea?

Rosacea can be divided into four types, but many people experience symptoms of more than one type at once. The four main types are:

  • Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea.
  • Papulopustular Rosacea.
  • Phymatous Rosacea.
  • Ocular Rosacea.

What happens if periocular skin cancer is diagnosed?

UV rays from the sun can raise the likelihood of a mole developing cancer. If you have a lot of moles, you should be particularly cautious in the sun.

It is critical to inspect your moles on a regular basis for any changes.

There are several steps you may take to protect your moles against sun damage, particularly during hot weather.

  • Stay in the shadow between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun is at its brightest.
  • Cover your skin with clothing — if you have moles on your face, wear a hat and sunglasses.
  • Apply a high-factor sunscreen (minimum SPF30) on a regular basis, and reapply after swimming.
