ABOUT THIS CONDITION

INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS

Hyperhidrosis is not a rare condition and may be as high as 5% of the population, affecting males and females equally, and most commonly occurring among the age of 25-64 years.

It can be generalised, affecting the entire body, or localised to specific parts of the body. Areas that have higher numbers of sweat glands called eccrine glands, include the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, the face, underarms and the scalp. When the sweating involves the whole body, generalised hyperhidrosis, there is usually an underlying condition and this may require further investigation. Focal or localised hyperhidrosis may be present at birth or be acquired later in life, usually starting during adolescence.

Our aim is to ensure that you are supported through the management of this emotionally difficult condition and appreciate how distressing this can be for you. We aim to offer you a solution that allows us to restore you to your best self.

What other conditions cause hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating?

Other conditions leading to secondary generalised sweating include disorders of the endocrine system, such as an over active thyroid gland, problems with the pituitary gland in the brain, diabetes and the menopause. When excessive sweating is newly occurring later in life and only affecting one side, investigations are usually performed to exclude any underlying cause.Hyperhidrosis can have functional consequences for you including cold clammy hands, dehydration and skin infections. In addition to the physiological consequences, excessive sweating can also have devastating emotional effects on the quality of your life. Additionally, anxiety caused by self-consciousness to the sweating may further aggravate the sweating.
