Toxin Related Complications

When carried out with due care and consideration, Botulinum Toxin treatment has a relatively low risk of complications. However, from time to time, toxin-related complications do arise. We understand that unfavourable outcomes can be physically and mentally traumatic for patients who had high hopes of success following Botulinum Toxin therapy.

ABOUT THIS CONDITION

INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS

At Face Restoration, we recognise the level of trust needed for revision after treatment failure and have a proven track record of performing successful toxin reversal and treatments. Our experts help identify problem areas from a clinical perspective and can carry out corrective treatments with empathy and care.

Symptoms vary depending on the amount of toxin used and the areas treated. Eyelid ptosis tends to be more prevalent in more mature patients, and therefore the symptoms appear to be more dramatic.

No matter how mild or severe your symptoms, we understand how toxin complications can affect your confidence and self-esteem, and we seek to resolve that as quickly as possible.

What are the most common toxin complications?

Complications arise depending on what area of the face has been treated. We’ve listed some of the most common complications below: Brow Ptosis Ptosis is the medical term for drooping or falling lower than the ideal anatomical position. Brow ptosis is caused by injecting too close to the eyebrow when treating the frontalis muscle (the muscle that causes forehead lines). Eyelid Ptosis A “Drooping eyelid” or eyelid ptosis is occasionally seen when patients have treated the facial glabella region. Toxin injections in the glabella region are commonly used to treat frown lines between the eyes. However, this can lead to toxins migrating and affecting the muscles above the eye every once in a while. The most commonly affected muscle is the levator palpebrae superioris, a triangular-shaped muscle above the eye responsible for lifting and retracting the eyelids. Facial Asymmetry Asymmetry is a fairly common complication and is usually due to either a slight deviation in the injection site or a slight difference in facial anatomy. “Spock” eyebrow is a common asymmetry we help our patients with. This occurs due to a function imbalance in two muscles that raise the eyebrows -the central frontalis and the lateral frontalis. The lateral frontalis lifts the brow tail and sometimes requires an additional botulinum toxin treatment to align and harmonise the functionality with the rest of the eyebrow.

Is Botulinum Toxin treatment reversible?

There is no “antidote” to Botulinum Toxin – technically speaking, it is not reversible. However, that does not mean that complications cannot be treated. We have a plethora of available treatment options for counteracting the effects of neurotoxin. Another advantage is that the results of botulinum toxin are not necessarily permanent. The best way to find out if “toxin reversal” treatment is possible is to book a consultation with our professionals.
