EYE CONDITIONS

Trichiasis (Misdirected Lashes)

The human eye needs eyelashes for several reasons. Eyelashes prevent dust and other foreign objects from entering the eye. They sense touch and trigger the blink reflex in order to protect the eye. Additionally, they add to the cosmetic appeal of the human face and to the perception of beauty.

However, eyelashes can cause problems or even be dangerous to the eyes in some cases. One of these conditions is Trichiasis or misdirected lashes.

What causes trichiasis or misdirected lashes?

In most cases, inverted lashes can be considered an isolated problem without a known cause. Fortunately, once these lashes are removed permanently, they usually do not grow back.

The following are some of the known causes of trichiasis:

  • Genetics — Some people are born with misdirected eyelashes. For others, they develop later in life.
  • Injury — Scar tissue may develop after an injury, causing the eyelashes to grow in the wrong direction.
  • Surgery — Like scar tissue after an injury, eyelashes can grow in the wrong direction after eyelid surgery.

Many different conditions can cause inflammation or scarring, causing lashes to grow incorrectly. Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), entropion, and infections are among these conditions.

What happens if trichiasis is left untreated?

It is possible for misdirected lashes to reach the surface of the eye and rub continuously or intermittently. This could result in irritation of the eye’s surface. There are a variety of problems that can arise from this disruption, ranging from mild discomfort and foreign body sensation to infection to permanent damage to the eye, including scarring and eventual blindness.

What is the difference between entropion and trichiasis?

Eyelid entropion results from the eyelid itself sitting incorrectly against the eye, rubbing along the eye’s cornea. Various factors can lead to entropion, including ageing, scarring, infections, inflammation, and congenital conditions. Trichiasis is caused by the eyelashes themselves growing toward the cornea.

How is trichiasis diagnosed?

In most cases, trichiasis causes enough irritation to prompt our patients to schedule an appointment with us. By using a slit lamp, we can determine if you are suffering from trichiasis or any other related conditions.
