SKIN CONDITIONS

Wrinkly hands

In youth your hands are soft with plump skin and wrinkle free. You may work hard to look youthful as you age, wearing sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats, but if you neglect your hands, this may give away your true age or can make you look older. Wrinkly hands are a natural but inevitable consequence of ageing.

ABOUT THIS CONDITION

INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS

As you age, your hands lose fat and elasticity and your skin loses collagen, hydration and volume. This reduced volume and decreased elasticity produces translucent skin that wrinkles and develops age spots. The age spots, also called solar lentigines, appear in areas most exposed to the sun, and can occur at any age, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

As we wash and sanitise our hands more frequently, this can break down the skin’s natural barrier function resulting in rough, dry and inflamed skin. Moisturising the skin after washing your hands and bathing helps to trap water in your skin, which will help to maintain hydration.

What treatments are available?

Several treatment options are available depending on the effect and desired outcome. Treatments are often combined to produce the optimal results, a holistic approach to focus on prevention with sunscreen as well as management of the current condition.

Age spots can be improved with medical grade skin care, thin bony hands can be plumped up with hyaluronic acid dermal filler as well as skin boosters to stimulate collagen and tighten skin. Profhilo and Juvederm Volite are highly effective skin boosters that boost volume and tissue strength in the skin and improve skin quality and fractional CO2 laser can improve age spots and fine lines on the skin surface.

When do you start noticing wrinkles on your hands?

Around the age of 40, most patients start noticing ageing of their hands, but if they were less careful in terms of sun protection earlier in life, the signs of ageing skin can start to appear much younger.
