Ectropion (Turned Out Eyelids)
Both Ectropion and Entropion are conditions that affect the eyelids. Ectropion is a condition whereby the eyelids turn outwards, causing dye and irritated eyes. Normally seen in older adults, the most common ectropions are of the lower eyelid.

What is ectropion?
Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward and no longer fits tightly over the surface eye. When the conjunctiva becomes exposed, it can become irritated and red. It is possible for the cornea to become irritated, scratched, or even scarred, which can impair the quality of your vision. As the lid loosens, the tear duct can turn away from the tear lake, causing tears. One or both lower eyelids may be affected by ectropion.
What causes ectropion?
The tissues holding the lower eyelids in place loosen as we age. This can happen due to time, trauma, surgery, medication side effects, and certain medical conditions, including sleep apnea, skin cancer, and Bell’s palsy. It can worsen with rubbing, smoking, and sleeping on your side or face. As a result, the eyelid may droop, turn outward (called Ectropion) or turn inward (called Entropion) toward the eye.
What happens if entropion is left untreated?
Like all eye related problems, ectropion is not a condition that you should ignore. Leaving ectropion untreated may result in permanent damage to the eye itself. If you’re suffering from light sensitivity, rapidly increasing redness in the eye, or visual disturbances please consult a doctor as soon as possible, as these are signs of damage to the eye.
