Forehead Lines, Frown Lines & Wrinkles
Wrinkles are a natural but inevitable consequence of the ageing process. It is completely normal to feel self-conscious about them, especially if you feel they make you look older than you feel. Wrinkles around the eyes are the earliest to appear and one of the most common presentations to FaceRestoration’s oculoplastic surgeons.
ABOUT THIS CONDITION
INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SYMPTOMS
As we age, our skin loses collagen, hydration, elasticity and support. The eyelid skin, in-particular being the thinnest in the body, often shows the earliest signs of ageing. Movement of muscles under the increasingly less supple skin can result in the formation of fine lines and deeper wrinkles.
Wrinkles are particularly noticeable around the eyes in the form of crow’s feet, between the eyebrows, seen as frown lines, and on the forehead (forehead lines). All of this can contribute to a tired, angry or sad appearance, even when you are not. These changes can start in your mid-twenties and early preventative strategies can slow down the progress as well as reverse the changes.
What noticeable changes are attributed to age?
Ageing around the lips can result in perioral lines, which may be particularly noticeable if you are a smoker.
Another key ageing change is the downward movement of the midface, fat and muscle as well as skin, that can result in the formation deeper folds of the eyelid bags, naso-labial folds (nose to lip lines), marionette lines (vertical lines from the corner of the mouth to the jaw) and jowls (sagging skin below the jawline). Visible wrinkles will extend to the neck and can also be noticeable in the hands and other sun exposed areas.
Many factors can contribute to the formation of wrinkles, including loss of volume, which occurs from the bone, fat pads, muscle and the skin. This can be accelerated by smoking, hereditary factors, illness and sun exposure.
What are frown lines?
Frown lines or ‘elevens’ are the lines that appear between the eyebrows, and are seen when we frown or squint. They are formed by the repeated contraction over time, of the muscles that bring the eyebrows together. Frown lines can make you look angry or worried even when you are not.
What are forehead lines?
Melasma, also known as chloasma, is a condition where patches of hyperpigmentation develop mainly on the face, mouth, cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead and chin, but can also be seen on the stomach. It can affect men and women, but is more common amongst females and often triggered by changes in hormone levels. Melasma occurs in 50% of pregnant women in the UK, when it is sometimes termed the ‘mask of pregnancy’ and up to 25% of women taking the oral contraceptive pill. If you have darker skin there is a higher risk, and oestrogen and progesterone sensitivity, stress, thyroid disease as well as sun exposure can all be triggers. We aim to control underlying triggers and recommend appropriate treatment options to reduce the appearance of the pigmentation and minimise recurrence.
