EYE SURGICAL TREATMENT

ENUCLEATION & EVISCERATION

seperator

If your eye has been damaged through trauma or you are living with blind painful eye, Enucleation & Evisceration (eye removal) treatment is sometimes the most appropriate treatment to ease discomfort.

At FaceRestoration, our aim is to preserve and restore eye function and aesthetics. However, in some cases, the safest treatment option is to remove all or part of the eye and provide a prosthetic. We are experienced and empathetic in such extreme circumstances and will offer treatment and support.

WHY FACE RESTORATION?

FEATURES, ADVANTAGES, & BENEFITS FOR OUR PATIENTS

Consultants Dr Rachna Murthy, and Dr Jonathan Roos, are leading ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons who aim to see you as soon as possible to get treatment underway when it is needed most.

Many patients experience profound sadness or loss after losing an eye. People’s emotions might change, and it can be challenging to accept the loss. It is also usual to have the sensation that the eye is still present or to have temporary visual hallucinations. These will get better with time.

If patients are having difficulty coping, they may choose to seek therapy, which will allow them to speak things through and come to terms with how they are feeling. We work with a multidisciplinary team and can help to source counsellors and therapists with a deep understanding of eye conditions.

Is driving permitted after eye removal?

As long as you have vision in your other eye and can meet the legal vision requirements, you can drive with an artificial eye. It is true that following surgery, vision will be reduced, which will result in more frequent head turning while driving. Patients who are blind can drive a normal vehicle as long as their vision is good enough.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the insurance company are legally required to be informed about this type of surgery.

What is Enucleation & Evisceration

During an enucleation, the entire eye is removed, including the sclera. In order to increase motility in the residual eye socket contents, the muscles controlling eye movement are left intact and connected to the orbital implant or the remaining soft tissues.

What is Evisceration

Evisceration is the removal of the internal eye structures but not the sclera (the white of the eye). This surgery leaves more of your natural soft tissues in place, meaning a less bulky prosthetic eye in the future.

When can I have a prosthetic eye?

It is important that we review the eye socket regularly after treatment. If the socket is completely healed after 2-3 months we will begin the process of making you a realistic prosthetic eye.
