NON SURGICAL EYE TREATMENT

Immunosuppression

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition that affects the eye socket tissues. As part of your assessment, we will examine the levels of inflammation in the deeper tissues and may propose immunotherapy to reduce inflammation in and around the eyes.

We recognise that TED is an unpleasant, disfiguring, and even vision-threatening illness that significantly reduces the quality of life. Immunosuppression is used to delay and relieve symptoms when they are most severe. As part of your therapy, we use a customised combination of medications and collaborate with your endocrinologist as part of a multidisciplinary approach.

DETAILS ABOUT THE TREATMENT

WHAT DOES IMMUNOSUPPRESSION DO?

Immunosuppressive drugs reduce inflammation caused by the immune system. They do not target the immune system. The effectiveness will depend on the underlying cause and drug.

WHAT IS THE DURATION OF TREATMENT?

The treatment duration is dependent on the level of disease activity and can be for several months.

DO I NEED TO INFORM MY GP?

Immunosuppression involves shared care amongst a multidisciplinary team, including your GP.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE NEEDED FOR IMMUNOSUPPRESSION?

Blood tests and/or scans are usually performed before making the decision to start immunosuppressive medication.

What immunosuppression treatment can I expect?

The most common form of immunosuppression is a short course of steroids to reduce inflammation and the inflammatory response on the body. This may be followed by a course of Mycophenolate (sometimes prescribed under the names mycophenolate mofetil or mycophenolate sodium) or another medication that suits your needs. Mycophenolate and it’s counterparts slow the activity in your condition and dampens the immune response rather than simply treating symptoms.

It is important to bear in mind that all treatments are prescribed based on your individual circumstances and that treatments may differ depending on the progression of your condition.

Will immunosuppression make me susceptible to infections and illnesses?

During immunosuppression therapy, your body will find it more difficult to fight off infections and common viruses. We will discuss this with you as part of your consultation and review appointments. Below are a few common steps to take to avoid infection:

  • Avoid close contact with anyone who you know has an infection.
  • Wash your hands frequently, and keep a small bottle of antibacterial gel on hand.
  • Brush and clean between your teeth on a regular basis to maintain oral hygiene.
  • If you are a smoker, please stop – smoking significantly reduces healing and immunity.
  • Ensure that your food is properly kept and cooked.
  • Try to keep your home clean and sanitary, particularly the kitchen, bathrooms, and toilets.

What causes Thyroid Eye Disease?

The most common cause of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and thyroid eye disease is Graves’ disease. Graves’ disease affects mostly young or middle-aged women, and it is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland. Graves’ disease patients are about 25% more likely to develop thyroid eye disease. The condition may occur before, during or after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition.

To help prevent further complications such as thyroid eye disease, patients should ensure that their hormone levels are monitored and under control with appropriate medication.
