EYE SURGICAL TREATMENT

Punctal occlusion

If you are living with symptoms of dry eyes or blepharitis, punctal occlusion surgery is often a good solution to alleviate discomfort. Punctal occlusion surgery closes the small “drains” in the corners of the eye. This helps the eyes to make better and longer use of the lubricating tears available.

As part of your treatment, you may have temporary punctal blockers placed. These dissolve over time, but they are a useful and conservative way to find out whether permanent punctal occlusion surgery will benefit. Both surgeries are same-day procedures and only require a local anaesthetic, meaning you’ll be able to travel home following treatment.

WHY FACE RESTORATION?

FEATURES, ADVANTAGES, & BENEFITS FOR OUR PATIENTS

When treating dry eyes it is important to get a clear picture so that we can manage your treatment as effectively as possible. At FaceRestoration, we have diagnostic imaging facilities available so that you can have treatment quickly.

A computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is helpful in locating inflammation and enlargement of soft tissue and muscles.

At FaceRestoration, you can expect to see two ophthalmic and oculoplastic surgeons who will consult you throughout your time under our care. Having two consultants means an in-built second opinion when diagnosing and planning treatments, as well as increased capacity during your post-operative care.

What does punctal occlusion mean?

The purpose of punctal occlusion is to block the drainage system of tears so that natural tears on the ocular surface can be preserved.

What does punctal occlusion involve?

A small funnel-shaped drain hole is found at the inner corner of the upper and lower eyelids. Small plugs called punctal plugs can be used to plug these drain holes, known as puncta. Plugs can be placed in either or both of the two tear ducts, both eyes or only the lower ducts.

How quickly does this treatment work?

Once your plugs are fitted you should see an improvement within 2-3 days. As part of your care, you will have a post operative review to check that treatment is working well and your symptoms are lessened.
