Eyelid Weight
The inability to shut the eyelid is an undesirable side effect of most kinds of facial paralysis (or facial palsy). Because the eyelid keeps the eyeball moisturised and protected from foreign substances, the inability to blink and seal the eye puts the eye at a significant risk for damage or infection.
Your surgeons may recommend eyelid weight surgery to help close and protect the eye. Eyelid weight surgery uses a small gold weight implanted behind the eyelid that enables the lid to close through gravity.

The benefits of having eyelid weight surgery include:
- Enhanced blinking function
- Improved eyelid closure
- Decreased likelihood of eye damage or infection
- Relief from dry eye symptoms
- Relief from wet and watery eye
- Increased comfort
How long will it take to heal after eyelid weight surgery?
The surgery is often conducted as an outpatient operation, which means you can go home the same day. Patients can generally close their eye immediately after implantation, and this function increases with time. As with all surgery, some swelling and/or bruising in the treatment area is normal following surgery, but it will go away in a few weeks.
Is the weight visible after treatment?
Patients normally see a slightly raised area on the eyelid. During your surgery we aim to conceal the weight within the natural contours of the eye sockets for maximum coverage.
What are eyelid weights made from?
We preferably use gold weights for surgery. Gold is a useful material as it is biocompatible with the vast majority of patients. Another advantage of gold is that it is safe to use with MRI machines.
