NON SURGICAL SKIN TREATMENT

Steroid injections

Steroid injections are now commonplace in aesthetic medicine to help prevent and manage scarring. Pre-surgical steroid injections may prevent the formation of a hypertrophic or keloid scar. Post-surgical steroid injections can help to minimise scars by breaking down collagen bonds in scar tissue.

We recognise that prominent, poorly healed scars can have an impact on how you feel about your appearance, especially if they are on your face or hands. Our specialists provide noninvasive scar reduction procedures and, in some cases, can prevent a surgical site from developing a hypertrophic scar or keloid.

AT A GLANCE

DETAILS ABOUT THE TREATMENT

DO STEROID INJECTIONS HAVE THE SAME SIDE EFFECT AS STEROID TABLETS?

Steroid injections can treat inflammation in a very localised area without being absorbed in significant amounts into the bloodstream. This minimises the risk of inflammation.

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATED WITH STEROID INJECTIONS?

Post trauma to reduce scar, active inflammatory skin conditions.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

15 - 30 minutes

IS ANAESTHETIC REQUIRED?

Often anaesthetic cream is used on the skin, and local anaesthetic mixed with steroid in the injection.

WHY FACE RESTORATION?

FEATURES, ADVANTAGES, & BENEFITS FOR OUR PATIENTS

FaceRestoration offers intralesional steroid injections for elevated and atypical scar types. Steroid injections are appropriate for keloid and hypertrophic scar forms, as well as other skin disorders.

Our surgeons at FaceRestoration have pioneered approaches to minimise scarring with their Scars-less TM approach and published medical papers practical approaches for surgeons to reduce and prevent scarring.

What is a keloid scar?

A keloid scar is a tissue overgrowth that occurs when too much collagen is formed at the site of an injury or surgery scar.

Even after the wound has healed, the scar continues to develop.

Keloid scars are elevated above the skin and might be pink, red, the same colour as the surrounding skin, or deeper in colour. They’re frequently irritating or itchy, and if they’re tight and close to a joint, they may limit movement.

What is a hypertrophic scar?

Hypertrophic scars, like keloid scars, are caused by an excess of collagen being formed at the site of a lesion.

Hypertrophic scars, unlike keloid scars, do not expand beyond the original wound’s perimeter. They may thicken for up to 6 months before progressively improving over the course of a few years.

Steroid injections help to decrease the inflammation and break down excess collagen in the scar tissue itself.

Will my scars completely disappear?

Unfortunately scars are a natural part of the healing process. A course of steroid injections may improve the appearance of previous scarring and is useful in scar management. At FaceRestoration we use the Scars-less™️ programme on our patients to prevent scarring and promote effective, fast healing.
